A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
