Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
