England along with Welsh Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa until the final, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
