Our Top Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Position.

On the surface, this work might appear closer to an arduous scholarly quiz than the latest popular music project from an artist whose last single was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Divided across four different movements and sung in 13 tongues, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged work investigating female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, often by way of the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded openness elsewhere—soars skyward here, supported by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer daring alone renders the work of other artists look quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That this album manages to escape overly intellectual posturing feels almost miraculous, with full praise belonging to the artist. While it's not the first time album to fuse historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions feel far higher here, with the balancing act more precarious. What really raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, is a core sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist during her peak, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts apart, the listener still want to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

This playful spirit shines clearly on a stunning Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four moments. Then, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration before a comically over-the-top string surge crashes in with comedic impact. The song then shifts to the frenetic single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener rarely quite know—or even want to know—where you is going to next."

Almost every song ends at a completely different point from where it began. A track examines the transient trappings of fame over a featherlight symphony only to collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused style starts out dark and brooding, with prowling vocals, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth its rough corners.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

A key achievement of Lux involves navigating the line between radical experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is no surprise that it has achieved her first work to break into the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. One track performed primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly infectious melodies while it spins upward. This feat gets echoed on a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, weaving layered melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the singing have a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of hidden treasure that requires time to completely mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, this record offers a sumptuous feast at which the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
