Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
